This week I was introduced to the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition (SAMR) model. This model assists the integration of technology into the classroom. Even though it is often depicted as a unidirectional process, each step has merit and is dependent on the lesson. To provide you with an example of each step, a small group of the Secondary PDPP cohort (2019) discussed the application of the Fitbit. The Fitbit is a direct substitution of a traditional, non-digitized watch as well as reading your pulse by applying pressure to your wrist. The technical augmentation provided by the Fitbit is providing digitized time and a pulse reader. The technical modification of the Fitbit is using this technology to track your physical activity, such as counting steps. The technical redefinition of the Fitbit allows you to collect your own fitness data and formulate a fitness plan. This is an example as to how may implement the SAMR model; however, I recognize that the actually feasibility of using this example in a classroom setting, even if it is physical education, is not very applicable since the cost of Fitbits exceed the funding available to secondary schools. Maybe in the future this will change.
